Personal History | As the daughter of a Starfleet Officer father and a Federation Scientist mother (who had also attended the Academy), it was preordained that Emily would also join Starfleet. From an early age Emily would proclaim her desire to follow her (maternal) Grandmother's example and become a (medical) doctor. Her grandmother encouraged her passion and even gave her an old medkit, the ampoules for the hypo-spray were all empty and the power packs had been removed from the other instruments, but Emily would spend hours diagnosing and treating her soft toys and dolls. At High School she took biology, chemistry, physics, maths with statistics and psychology as she believed these subjects would give her a good grounding when it came to pre-med. When she wasn't at school or out with her friends, she would read medical/science text books or Shakespeare. Speaking of Shakespeare, she learnt to read Klingon so she could read their version, but found that it concentrated too much on the History and tragic plays for her liking. At seventeen she entered the Starfleet Medical Academy where she excelled in her studies. After graduation she joined a Federation humanitarian aid mission on Cardassia. Even nearly 5 years after the end of the Dominion War, Cardassia was still recovering. A cynical person might say that the Cardassians were reaping what they had sown, but Emily only saw people that needed help and as a trained medic, it was her responsibility to provide that help. Her father told her that one of greatest qualities of a Starfleet Officer, besides loyalty and honour was adaptability, bearing this in mind after returning from Cardassia, she underwent training to become a counsellor. Also since many physical illnesses have an underlying psychological cause she thought that by helping to heal the mind she could help to heal the body. In 2386 she was assigned as a MO to the Avondale Production Facility. One night Emily couldn't sleep so she went to the commissary for a drink and a bite to eat. She collected her meal and sat alone at one of the tables. Moments later a ruggedly handsome man approached her, introduced himself as Richard and asked if he could join her. She agreed and they talked together, well into the next morning. After that they would meet each evening for dinner and over time became good friends and this friendship eventually blossomed into love. Medical Records Had the usual childhood illnesses. When Emily was 20 she was in a shuttle crash. Physical trauma she experienced in crash resulted in appendicitis and she had to undergo an appendectomy before it ruptured and endangered her life. While she recovered she kept up with her studies by means of her friends recording lectures for her and bringing her the assigned homework. Emily Marlowe is an excellent physician. She is competent and has a mind that allows her to adapt quickly to new situations. She demonstrates ability in most medical disciplines but does not favour any above the others. Emily has a great bedside manner, but seems unable to cultivate a sense of scientific detachment. For this reason I suggest that she major in psychology or psychiatry, so she come become a counselor, a profession where her lack of detachment may be an asset rather than a deficiency. - Cmdr./Dr. Amanda Fisher, MD, Head of the Starfleet Medical School Student Evaluation Committee. Has a tattoo of the Rod of Asclepius on her right upper arm. |
