Mission:
Episode 15 - The Evil That Lies Beneath
Location: SCIF - Deck 9 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD001 1100 hrs
Rowena was standing at the main entrance to the SCIF with the new cadet. "Hello, Cadet, Nobox. Welcome to the SCIF, which stands for Secret Compartmentalized Information Facility. By some, well mainly Beckett, the Belly of the Beast. This is where we run all our intelligence operations. Let's go inside." She walked to the two sliding doors which split with a slight hush and revealed the large room inside. Big screens, and computers around. There is a large door in the back and a smaller one on the other side.
She walked into the room and moved her arms around as if showing the room. "This is the inside of the belly, sort of speaking. This is where the magic happens." She then walked to the big door in the back. And this is our intelligence vault. Only a handful can enter through these doors. Our most classified intelligence is in here." She then pointed to the other smaller door. "And that's my office. Any questions so far, cadet?"
"Nothing else Ma'am, just wanna get briefed on what I am looking forward to working upon" Andrea replies
"You are still a cadet, so you are still learning. There we will not throw you into the hard stuff of this department just yet," Rowena said smiling, "So I will team you up the my data analyst specialists for now, they are Beckett and Loran. You will find we have a lot of enlisted people in our department. Intelligence is tricky, and not everyone in the academy seems to be cut out for it. So we tend to get many people from the outside to help us. Stay away from Miss Brown. She tends to be moody. She is an ex-new maquis and I am not sure if she has shaken her past quite yet."
"....okhe..." Andrea replies in a slightly concerned tone."So where can I find Analysts Beckett and Loran"
"Ah, follow me, cadet." Rowena walked to the computers in the center. "Our data specialists can be found on these computers. Always going over the intell that we gathered in all ways." She pointed to one of the big screens in the room that showed all the security cameras on the ship. "We at intelligence pride ourselves on knowing everything that is going on. Isn't that right, Mister Beckett and Miss Loran?" She is now directed to her data system analysts.
Jayna was sitting in for Kaylara who had taken an extended shore leave. She looked around the large console. "Yes, ma'am. We do our best." Then she smiled at the cadet. "Welcome aboard."
"Very good, Loran," Rowena said. "You can show her around, can't you? I am assigning the cadet here to you two for a while." She glanced over to the grumpy Beckett. "I trust you two show her the ropes around here."
Tobias looked up from his console and instantly thought about who the hell gave a Cadet clearance for this kind of work. Sigh, is nothing sacred left to be earned. he thought. He swallowed that comment down before he spoke. "Yes, ma'am we usually know what the Commodore wants for breakfast the night before he knows he wants it. Welcome to where it all happens."
"I'll be happy to show her around." Jayna glanced at Tobias. "He's still figuring out breakfast."
"You should take an example of Mr. Beckett, Miss Mira. Knowing what the commodore wants for breakfast is what we are famous for." Rowena grinned as she said that. "We grays know everything that goes on the ship at all times." She looked up at the screens. "But marine country is still a blank to us. Well, we have most parts of it. But there is always that blind spot that the major demanded. But I will get access soon. For security reasons of course," Rowena added.
That concerned Jayna greatly, but she kept her expression passive and focused on her console. Why would McGowen want access to Neil's part of Marine Country?
"Is Lieutenant Jayna not a double agent?" Tobias asked with a grin. He felt uncharacteristically jovial today. The banter was welcome today. Perhaps he had spent too much time on his own working and he welcomed the company, perhaps it was Hoa who entered his life like a breath of fresh air. He was still not sure. "I think the one thing Cadet Nobox should learn is that the intelligence game is not all glamour spy work. A lot of it is boring data work."
"The majority of what we do is data work," Jayna said dryly, not commenting on her double agent status. "Anything else falls between few and far between and for specialists only." It wasn't quite true, especially as her specialty was infiltration to gather data, but it was close enough.
Andrea replies, "Let's see if I can make things interesting here."
"Interesting often leads to trouble," Jayna replied lightly. "Intel specializes in information. That in and of itself is interesting, but we generally collate and analyze when we're not working with the Marines or on a particular assignment from the captain." Also not entirely true, but she didn't want the cadet thinking they were some sort of covert ops team. The cadet settled in soon enough and get into the routine.
Nearby was a diminutive woman. She looked nearly like a porcelain doll but there also was a hint of Asian features about her. Sitting at her station, she was speaking in Romulan at the computer, which repeated something back at Romulan back in her. Curiously, the universal translators in the area seemed to be turned off. She pounded a fist into the console and likely swore in some other language before realizing that there were people nearby. She looked at everyone, shrugged, and went back to talking to the computer in Romulan.
Jayna spoke fluent Romulan and couldn't help smiling. "That's Emiko Marley," she said to the cadet. "You'll no doubt get to work with her as well."
Emiko swung back around and looked again at the Lieutenant. She had no idea that there was going to be a tour or that the Lieutenant already knew who she was. After all, Emiko was enlisted. Why should an officer know who she was on her first day on the ship. "May I inquire, sir, about the cadet's duties and who will be training her?"
"The Cadet's duties are whatever we tell them to do." Tobias said with a smirk. It was his awkward attempt at humor. The intent was there but it did not land well.
Jayna looked to Rowena, then added. "She's here to learn the ropes, starting with the basics." Which meant she'd be tailing Tobias part of the time. At least, that's what Jayna hoped. It would do him good to help the cadet understand the non-classified part of intel.
Emiko tried hard not to roll her eyes at Beckett. At least she would be able to boss around a future officer before he became a stuck up arse that looked down on the enlisted ranks. "As you say, sir. I will get back to my Romulan conjugations until requested, sir. If the cadet requires assistance in any of the languages that I know, I am certain that you will send her to me, sir." Unwilling to swear or call anyone names in another language in front of Rowena, Emiko bit her tongue from further commentary.
"Well, I am sure we can all teach her something. Just treat her as one of the team. She will also be rotating in other departments as a cadet. But her main goal is intelligence. So here she is. How much we can reveal in this field to cadet is listed in the handbook. Has anyone here read that?" Rowena looked around the room to see the responses. She knew Beckett did, he was very by the book. But the rest. She then wondered if she had.
"I've read it." It had been a while, but Jayna did remember most of it. Every now and then she referred to it as well.
"I have, sir," Emiko replied lazily, wishing she would stop getting interrupted on her Romulan conjugations.
"Nice to meet you," Jayna said to the cadet. She nodded to the others. She had a meeting in a few minutes and there were a few things she wanted to do first.
Tobias half listened to what went on around him. At the moment the fact that the Pioneer had begun to send out trinary transmissions piqued his interest. This was something someone only did when they attempted to cover up what they were sending.
