Mission:
Episode 15 - The Evil That Lies Beneath
Location: Science Lab 6 - Deck 6 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD005 1800 hrs
Fathom walked into one of the labs where Mignon was working. "Have you found anything remotely interesting?"
Mignon shook her head. "No, but I'm probably in the wrong field for what they want. Isn't there something like a space jellyfish or a mini Cthulhu that could give us some answers?"
"Jellyfish don't shift to other universes and Cthulhu is from an ancient cosmic horror book. I never read it, but one of my roommates in the Academy loved Lovecraft," Fathom replied.
"I wonder if Leonard or Harris found anything. They're at least in the right field of study," Mignon asked. She really hadn't done much as she was still recovering from her time in sickbay and was picking up all the routine jobs to give the other scientists more time to research..
Narin followed Fathom into the room, catching her comment about never having read Lovecraft. "Sounds like we need to institute mandatory reading," he joked, as he made his way to an empty seat.
Fathom turned to the new arrival and grinned. "As long as I get to propose a book of my own." Maybe Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, if they stuck with old earth writers. Or The Cay. Then she snapped her fingers. "I know. Journey of the Oceanauts."
“Fair enough,” Narin responded, his expression had shifted to more serious demeanor as he contemplated their current situation. “I’m not sure I’m in the mood for cosmic horror myself.”
"What is this about cosmic horror?" Selorina asked as slinked catlike into the room.
Maeve had studied the layout of the ship prior to her arrival. She had a basic idea of where the science department was. Ship life was not the norm for her. She had spent many months on many ships, but she wasn't sure she would ever fully adapt. She rounded the corner and entered a room of Officers. "Sirs," She addressed respectfully as she came to a stop just inside the door.
Raising his gaze from the PADD, Narin noticed Maeve standing at the door. He immediately recognized her from the picture in her file. "Welcome, Chief," he greeted, rising from his seat and approaching Maeve. He extended his hand in greeting. "I'm Lieutenant Valen, the Assistant Chief Science Officer."
Turning towards the voice, her eyes landed on the officer who had greeted her before Maeve moved to shake his hand. "Thank ye, Lieutenant." She grinned. As she released his hand and tucked it behind her back as was natural and habit for her.
Narin turned his attention back to the room, deciding to introduce those who had already gathered. He gestured towards Mignon. "This is Lieutenant Mejia, our Alien Archeologist and Anthropologist." Then, he motioned towards Fathom. "And here we have Lieutenant Fellini. We're still assessing her literary tastes, but she's our Marine Biologist." Narin smiled before turning to Selorina. "Lastly, we have Lieutenant M’Kress, our Astrometrics Officer."
"I have great taste in fiction. It simply doesn't include cosmic horror," Fathom said, flashing Narin a grin.
Then she turned her attention to the new arrival. "Don't worry, it's not mandatory, no matter what the lieutenant thinks." She smiled before changing the subject. "Welcome to the Pioneer. What's your specialty?"
"We're pretty casual around here," Mignon explained. "As long as we get the work done." She didn't want the new arrival to think they were avoiding work.
Michael walked into the lab with his ever present tankard. He took a rather large draught from it, there was a little golden dribble that clung to the stubble on his chin. "Greetings fellow scientists. Anything new and intriguing." His diminutive stature made it so that he was as high as most of the others' hips.
"We have a new member of the team," Fathom replied to Michael. "She's about to tell us what her specialty is."
Maeve wasn't sure she liked all the attention but the sheer difference between here and the Diplomat Corps was refreshing. Less ego and more adventure. She was just about the speak when another person entered the room.
Sha'Zen entered the room, she'd heard that they had a new colleague and wished to meet them.
"Boy, there's a whole heap o' you, ain't there?" Maeve said with a smile as she watched the door for a moment before turning back to the room. "What'd ye ask? Oh aye, me specialty." She paused as she thought over the best way to explain what she was. ""Me specialty's xenolinguistics, y'see. But I Spent most o' the last decade in the diplomat corps, I 'ave."
"It is alright, Chief, we have all had pasts, I was a member of my homeworld's Defense Force, before I joined Starfleet and my studies into biology." Sha'Zen said.
"That's great. I don't think we have a dedicated linguist on the ship," Mignon said. "I'm sure your skills will come in handy."
"My specialty is that I drink and I know things. You have arrived at the very worst time. There is definitely something amiss aboard the Pioneer. But settle in first, then we can bring you up to speed on the chaos." Michael said as he tossed his feet up on the console and drank deeply from his tankard.
"Is there ever a best time?" Sheldon asked, having just entered the lab. "I didn't get the memo about a party."
"Not a party, just an informal gathering," Fathom replied. "And we have a new scientist on board. Maeve, this is Sheldon Leonard, a theoretical physicist. Sheldon, Maeve is a Xenolinguistics Specialist."
"That's an interesting field. Do you specialize in humanoid languages, or can you speak mammalian?"
Maeve smiled, "I can be gettin' a workin' fluency in most languages that use a larynx." She started her accent getting thicker as she got excited. She loved languages and discussing them with others. "I can be understandin' and translatin' others, but obviously, I be lackin' the anatomy to be replyin' meself." She grinned.
"That's fascinating," Fathom said, grinning. "I understand some cetacean, but I still need the UT."
Selina walked into the room. " Hey I hear we have a new person in the team! " She looked about until she saw someone unfamiliar and waved. She appeared to be a Caitian but looked a little more human like. " Hi, I'm Lieutenant JG Kyle, Stellar Cartography, it's a pleasure to meet you. "
"Pleasure to be meetin' ye as well, Lieutenant " Maeve replied unable to fight the training of standing up straight and more reverent when speaking with a commissioned officer. She had to admit the more people she met the more she believed the earlier statement about the relaxed attitude and while she knew she would like it, it was still going to be an adjustment. "So, any idears as to what we be doin'?" She asked to the room in general.
Narin glanced at Maeve. "This was a meet and greet for you. We wanted to say 'hello' and welcome you to the team."
Selina looked to Maeve. " I am curious, Do you know any feline languages? Caitian, Khizinti and Lyran all share the same root language. I could teach you the verbal aspect of it if you're interested, However I don't believe I could teach you the ear, whisker and tail aspect of the language. But you would be able to communicate verbally, which is something very few non felines can do. "
Out of interest, Selorina moved closer to Maeve and Selina to hear the formers reply.
"I am sure I may," She replied with a smile. "I have a form of synthisesia. I can see' languages and how they be structured." She started a little hesitant, it wasn't all that long ago that people thought she was crazy when she told them. "You be correct with the non-verbal." She added softly.
Salina smiled and nodded at Maeve. " Alright then, I can download a program and send you a copy to your PaDD with the language and structure of feline standard of the sentence structures as well and a breakdown of verbal components. " She paused briefly. " There are also several other Caitians aboard as well that I don't think would mind if we overlooked something and asked for their input. We've good a pretty good crew on this ship and just about everyone I've met has been super friendly and willing to help out. " She said smiling.
"The SerNumi language is verbal, but we can also use the chromophores in our skin to display our emotions or warn of danger to our fellows." Sha'Zen explained.
"That is simply fascinating..." Michael began and in truth even though his comment seemed sarcastic he was being honest. He found the chromophores to be fascinating. "...Chief may I offer you a drink. It is what I do here. I drink and I know things." The diminutive man said with a smile and raised his tankard in toast.
"Of course, Lieutenant, a drink would be most welcome." Sha'Zen said with an attempt at a smile.
Michael had been talking to Maeve however, when it came to drinking the more the merrier. "I shall be right back." He said with a smile and dashed away. Moments later he returned with two metallic tankards. "Here you go. My own special blend, none of that synthetic stuff."
Maeve wondered for a moment, she was technically on duty and while she was one who enjoyed a good drink and the ship seemed to be as laid back as they said, she just couldn't bring herself to say yes. "Ah, thanks for the offer, but I be on duty now. Maybe another time, yeah?"
Michael took the drink that he had gotten for Maeve and poured it into his glass. "As am I..." He replied and took a deep gulp.
Sha'Zen accepted the tankard and took a long draft of its contents. "Good, and strong. Have you tried Sergeant Thompson's Rakshi? It is an Earth drink made from the distillation of fermented millet?" She asked Michael.
"And here I thought I was the only person on the ship with a still in their quarters. I will have to contact Sergeant Thompson and give it a try." Harris said with a smile.
Fathom looked at Sha'Zen and Michael and shook her head. Not her circus, not her monkeys. She turned to Mignon. "This looks like a good time to head back to my lab. See you later."
When the marine biologist left, Mignon turned back to her computer to see if she could get anything else done before the end of her shift. But she wasn't so sure she'd have any luck. After a minute, she logged out. She'd finish her shift in the garden cube. Better to get out now before someone started singing.
