Mission:
Episode 15 - The Evil That Lies Beneath
Location: USS Pioneer - Bubble Universe
Timeline: MD007 1100 hrs
Neil let the conversation lag for a second before asking Vura, "Counselor, you are you picking up anything telepathically that might indicate a link to this entity of Rowena's? Is this just a jail cell or do they have some sort of mental connection to it? How are they monitoring us. I doubt it's a constant thing, though I suppose it's possible we're all here in some sort of dream state. If the entity has some sort of mental connection that we could exploit..."
Vura swallowed hard when she had to admit to herself that she did not try telepathy but Deltan telepathy generally only worked with Deltans without touch and touching another non-Deltan, well, that was quite something else. She explained, "Deltan telepathy generally only works with Deltans and is not normally strong outside small distances. Could you imagine how we Deltans would go insane if we could hear everyone's thoughts being projected around us all the time? In any case, most of it tends to be images and sensations. It is difficult to explain. It is one of the reasons why people are so attracted to us. Now, if I were to touch you, I could create a strong telepathic link for us to communicate. I would also, quite likely drive you insane. Though, Hermia seemed to survive a lengthier touch." The Deltan gave the doctor a meaningful wink. "I could try and reach out and send something but just because I send out, does not mean I will get a response and does not mean that I could link with whatever."
"Right," Neil said, musing. "Noted, though to be fair I've had other things crawl around inside my brain before so insanity is a relative term."
Alyssa looked at Hermia. The two of them were telepathic. She hadn't felt anything that would indicate a link with the entity inside Rowena, or any other entity. When she first arrived here, it felt completely empty, except for the major.
Not wanting to answer someone else's question, she telepathically asked the doctor, <"I felt nothing besides those of us here. Did you?"
To Alyssa she said "Yes."
Then aloud, "When I arrived, I was alone, and I didn't sense anybody, until Vura arrived." Hermia began. "Shortly after Vura arrived, we encountered an entity that looked like and claimed to be Captain Edmund Merrick, but what I sensed in his mind was anger, hatred and disgust." Hermia said. "I consider Edmund a friend and they were not his thoughts or emotions."
"I agree," Vura answered. "I know Merrick quite well." There was something of innuendo and sadness behind Vura's words, "quite well." However, she continued quickly, "That behavior was quite out of character for him."
That reminded Alyssa of the thoughts she had about Jek'Lar when she first arrived. "I didn't see or sense anyone, but I did have some rather negative thoughts when I first got here. Thoughts that were not ones I would normally consider." She shook her head. "I don't know if it's the same thing at all, though." She looked around at the others. "Anyone else?"
Neil rubbed at his face, cracked his neck as he rolled his shoulders to loosen them up and said, "We're looking for a sympathetic link of some kind. Energy is energy and there almost has to be a weak point we can exploit. What if this space takes more power the more spread out we are or we somehow effect it in a way where it's more taxing to maintain."
The Counselor tilted her head. "To short it out, essentially? If we do not know the power source or how it generates power or maintains this area, how do we do it?"
"That's the problem. We don't know if the entity is feeding off our energy, using it to keep this place viable, or if we've been put here to die. I mean, there's a whole ship of people it can feed off, if that's what it wants." Alyssa tried to remember if she knew anything about Rowena and shook her head. "I didn't know Commander McGowen, so I don't know if there's something in her past that connects to this. But I do think the major is right. We need to find some way to disrupt whatever is keeping this dimension active. If we can find the right counter action, we might be able to get back to where we belong." She looked down at what data there was from her scans. "I still think a judicious use of antimatter is the answer to disrupting this pocket dimension. The question is where and how much." Although she was beginning to believe that blowing up the ship would be the best answer.
"Testing...testing..." El telepathically spoke to the room. "Here's an idea," she verbally said to the room. "Why not go down to engineering, and switch everything off, then see what happens, and if that doesn't do anything, we can fiddle with the warp core to get its attention."
Ah! If it controls this area, it might be able to hear us but not hear telepathy, Vura understood. She was pretty certain that nothing she did would be able to be heard telepathically by anyone else. She also did not have the know how regarding engineering, so she looked at Elen helplessly and shrugged apologetically.
"If you want to check, go ahead," Alyssa said, turning back to her console. "I still need to verify some data." There'd been no one and no thing on the ship when she arrived--until she sensed the major. She chose to believe her negative thoughts were likely from whatever creature inside Rowena sent her to this place. But she still needed to run some calculations before suggesting they set the self-destruct because they only had one shot at getting this right.
"Elen, I'll join you, but I'm not sure how much help I'll be." Hermia said.
"Please let me know what you find." That could alter Alyssa's calculations. She wasn't sure if this pocket dimension would last for years or hours. That was something else she needed to verify. At least whatever entity that sent them here hadn't taken away all their options.
Neil looked about and then said, "I'm going to explore, I suppose. See what's available and what's not. I doubt we'll be able to depend on the computer for anything and might need some gear. And I might start breaking a few things to see what's tangible and what's not." Catching his officer's eyes, he said, "Check in at half hour intervals. Stay safe, use your judgement."
"Neil, if you're going down near Intelligence, there's an engineering office across the hall, fire up the computer there, and it'll tell me the distance by the lag of its display to the main one, might give an idea of the dimension" Elen asked.
Vura frowned, though it did not seem to diminish her beauty. She silently wondered, could she reach out to Llaxia? They were both Deltan but being in another universe, would any telepathy reach her? Maybe if they were in the same spot in their respective locations on the ships.... Her eyes lit up and she declared, "I think I will go to engineering."
"Sure, could do with some extra help with what I'm planning. Hermia, how's your surgery skills ?" El put her arms round her companions for the trip down to her domain.
Alyssa watched the others walk out of astrometrics, then went back to her analyses. Hopefully, she could find something useful in the next thirty minutes.
Vura flinched and jumped out of Elen's touch. She did not want to risk any negative effects in this place to Elen. In their universe, Elen might end up being extremely desirous of her and that would lead to more problems than either could handle. "Happy to lend a hand, or anything else you might want."
