Mission:
Episode 16 - Silent Cries
Location: Mira Jayna's Office, SCIF - Deck 9 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD003 0930 hrs
Jayna looked around her office—now her former office, even though she'd officially spent half her time with The Cure. But over time, she'd spent less and less time here as there was always something to do in Marine Country. She didn't mind as it meant she could spend more time with Neil. In fact, of late, she felt more at home in Marine Country.
Since coming to the Pioneer, there'd been a number of changes in her life. She'd gone from warrant officer to lieutenant and infiltration specialist to assistant chief intelligence officer and now to intelligence liaison for The Cure. So much had changed. So much was still the same. Until now.
When she first arrived on the Pioneer she felt more like a ghost, walking silently through the corridors. Her twin had been on the Pioneer at the time. But Jayde had always been more Vulcan than Jayna, and more comfortable in the spotlight. It was part of why she'd chosen security. In contrast, Jayna preferred being in the shadows and had chosen intelligence and infiltration. She'd still be in the shadows, but it wouldn't be the same because she wasn't alone any more. She smiled. Falling in love changed everything. Well, it had changed her, if not her occupation.
For the second time she checked the small security box to make sure it held her throwing knives, her personal files, her secure drive. Then she checked the pocket of her jumpsuit to make sure Neil's copy of her recent investigation was still there. Since she learned about the non-corporeal entities, she researched everything she could find on Rowena's past and her takeover of the commodore and the ship. Gage's investigation saved her time, but she already knew a great deal as she heard about what happened on Rowena's former ship. That gave Jayna a place to begin her research.
Then, Neil's official request to check Rowena's computer and make sure the chief intelligence officer couldn't take control of the ship again gave her the last bits of information she wanted, plus it gave her the official permission she needed in case anyone else questioned her research.
The report was her last formal assignment as assistant chief intelligence officer. With permission, she added additional protocols and redundancies to ensure that one person would not be able to use the intel computers to take control of the ship through intelligence again—even though it had not, technically, been Rowena. The intel computers were still separate from the Pioneer's computers, and still secured, but if there was another unauthorized breach, the assistant chief intelligence officer and the CO would be notified.
That was her parting gift to the department. Now she was moving to The Cure as their full-time liaison. Still a ghost. Still doing what she'd done since she was a child. Still a spook. But no longer alone. At least she hoped so. With Neil's promotion, she wasn't sure how often he'd be called away from the ship, but she no longer felt as isolated.
Jayna checked her office one last time to make sure nothing of hers remained and walked silently out the door, pausing to say a word to the Marine on duty.
Once she got on the turbolift she felt lighter, which surprised her. Since childhood she'd done infiltration and information gathering. That wasn't going to change, but she was excited about the potential of being a full-time liaison with The Cure and being a part of Red Team. The new position held a promise of change within familiar parameters and she was eager to see what this new future held for her.
