The USS Pioneer returns to the safety of their home, Empok Nor. The crew is in need of some rest and escape from all that has happened. Commodore Tyler Malbrooke looks at this as a chance for him to reconnect with his wife and crew, and for the crew to reconnect with themselves.

The vacation is short live however, when a race who never wanted to be found sends a distress signal to the only beings they have ever known, the crew of the USS Pioneer. These people have no idea why this is happening or who is responsible. Can the Pioneer help a species that they don't remember exists?
