The USS Pioneer has been a test bed for a new joint program created by the Starfleet Marine Corps and Starfleet. This program is designed to integrate Marine officers into the command structure of starships. Colonel Cornelius Tremble was the first subject of this program.

Now Brigadier General Francis Sobel and Admiral Timothy Rice have decided to see how the program is doing. To achieve this they question the crew of the USS Pioneer.
