730 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Episode 16 - Silent Cries
Location: The Quarters of Audie Fitch - Deck 4 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD005 2230 hrs

Via Message:

This train, she's bound for glory, well, this train
This train, she's bound for glory, well, this train
This train, she's bound for glory, well, this train
This train, she's bound for glory, well, this train
This train, she's bound for glory
If you wanna get to Heaven, well, you've got to be holy
This train, she's bound for glory, well, this train...

Zek got the alert on his PADD as he was debating whether sleep was on the menu for the night. He doubted it, but receiving a communication at this hour was more surprising. When he noticed it was from Audie he could not help but smile lightly.

He sent a message back, "Did your nightmares stop? I heard that Pioneer has not reported its mission. Are you well?"

This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do.

The Bajoran looked at the PADD with the message. Two songs in a row. Audie clearly did not want to talk freely. Something was happening, but he was at a loss for what it was. Based on the message, though, he believed that Audie's nightmares had not ceased and the Pioneer must be heading towards a place where there was a solution.

He talked to himself, "Well, if she does not want to, or does not feel safe communicating openly, perhaps I should do the same?"

He typed back lyrics to another Earth song, hoping to convey his meaning.

Took a shot to the chin.
Looks like you just can't win
In this do or die situation.
And it's harder than it seems
To survive, keep alive and make your dreams,
Make your dreams all come true.
You gotta, you gotta give it your best shot.
Give it everything you got.
Oh, you gotta hang tough.
Hang tough. Hang tough.

++++++++++++++
Though I know that evening's empire has returned into sand
Vanished from my hand
Left me blindly here to stand, but still not sleeping
My weariness amazes me, I'm branded on my feet
I have no one to meet
And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to
Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you

"Really, Audie? You want another bedtime story? Why don't you have your boyfriend do that?" He thought for a moment and then considered, "Wait. Does she not have a boyfriend or did I somehow become it?" Zek considered the implications of that statement. "I certainly could do a lot worse. She's definitely a beauty. Either way, we're definitely going to have to have a discussion about this 'other guy.'"

So, he wrote back,

When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you
If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do
Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing
Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true

++++++++++++
… We talked of the end of the world, and then
We'd sing a song an' then sing it again
We'd sit for an hour an' not say a word
And then these words would be heard

… So long, it's been good to know yuh
So long, it's been good to know yuh
So long, it's been good to know yuh
This dusty old dust is a-gettin' my home
And I've got to be driftin' along

"Goodnight to you, too, Audie," he told the room when he noticed the link closed.
