Mission:
Episode 16 - Silent Cries
Location: Sick Bay - Deck 5 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD010 1800
Rommie registered Neil’s presence as she was able to access the Cure's net once the Pioneer landed. Technically, she was still in read only, but it was enough. Using Azure's medical tricorder system, she scanned the Colonel's bio-readouts: Left arm broken. Left leg broken. Multiple contusions and abrasions. Gastrointestinal perforation that ruptured his spleen and damaged the kidney. Broken right collarbone. Missing right leg…the wound appeared that it had been twisted free and completely ripped away from the hip socket in total…
The AI didn’t processed that in between one heartbeat and another. The Colonel’s suit was all that had saved him, with tourniquets having been deployed before the armor died. His body glove had been shredded so his body temperature wasn’t being regulated. She updated medical protocols to Azure, suggesting a Pharma sleeve as well as fluids and medications. Specifically, blood plasma and Ringers lactate.
After adding pain medication to the list, she activated Lieutenant Jayna's comm. "Lieutenant, after scanning the Colonel, I believe he is a likely candidate for immediate dust off. How best should we move him?"
Jayna was relieved to hear Rommie's voice again. "That depends. How busy are the transporters? Can we both be beamed directly to sickbay? I could carry him out, but I don't want to risk further injury." She did not want him going anywhere without her if she could help it.
Rommie split her comm's, adding Pioneer's emergency medical channel to a query. "This is Warrant Rommie. The Colonel is in need of immediate assistance. Please advise."
As Hermia was in surgery, Vura answered, "This is sickbay. Acknowledged." She paused for a moment, "Did you say the Colonel? As in Tremble?"
Rommie's facial features didn't shift outwardly, but her uniform piping flashed briefly from medical green to marine green. "Yes Lieutenant. Colonel Tremble is currently suffering from a number of injuries, including a missing leg."
Vura urgently insisted, "Beam Tremble directly to pre-surgical biobed 2. I will alert the Doctor immediately."
Hermia was just finishing up her surgery on Bajoran PFC Hona Nya. The poor Marine had received severe burns while down on the planet, the Pioneer now orbited.
Her MARVEL suit was the only thing that kept her alive. It had taken the brunt of the attack. The body glove had kept her external temperature down, and the suit's systems had flooded her body with chemicals in an attempt to reduce the pain and delay her from going into immediate shock.
Hermia had removed the suit and placed the PFC in a surgical biobed and erected a sterile field to prevent infection. Once her patient was stable, the CMO had begun the lengthy task of removing the burnt dead skin, before activating the bed's dermal regeneration field and Kelotane dose.
Vura looked over at Hermia and with concern that Neil did not know that she had, as far as Vura figured, asked, "Are we going to be able to regrow his limbs, or is it too far gone?"
"Well, the limb is completely gone, so his leg will have to be regrown or replaced," Jayna muttered half under her breath as she glanced first at Vura, then at Neil. He didn't look good, but at least he was alive. She was off to the side, out of their line of sight, so she slowly moved back to be out of the way.
Realizing this discussion was going on in front of a barely conscious Neil, Vura said, "We'll fix you right up. Sorry to worry you. Perhaps we should get you put under so you won't feel any pain."
Bleary, Neil tried to focus but his head was swimming and he had to keep his eye(s?) shut, even as he murmured, "Said it...Pain Fades. Chicks dig scars...Glory is forever.."
"We'll do what we can." Hermia said as she prepared for surgery. "First we have to stabilize him, then we can treat his other wounds."
The CMO activated the sterile field and injected him with anesthesia and pain relief.
Neil had been struggling to shake off the fog and sort through where he might be and what exactly was happening to him, his brain wading through what felt like drying cement with sounds and conversation taking what seemed like hours to coalesce into something recognizable: Neil's brain was trying to reboot and the pain centers were flooding his synaptic network, demanding attention first.
As his eye began to roll back what little coherent thought was attempting to rally again the overwhelming pain that overran the field, the CMO's medical cocktail flooded through Neil's system and he visibly relaxed, a smile playing over his face as he thought (or thought he recognized) a familiar form and his right hand shifted from his side, questing for a (what he thought at least) was a familiar derriere, as his cracked and bloodies lips murmured, "Hey, Jayna..."
Then he passed out.
Vura looked over at Hermia surprised and asked, "Did he really call me Jayna? What did you put in that medical cocktail, Hermia?!"
Jayna was now by the wall, so they wouldn't notice her presence--although the Suit wasn't in full stealth mode. Fortunately, neither of the two women could hear her chuckle. She'd have to tell Neil about that later.
"Yes." Hermia said. "As for the medical cocktail, the usual, Kayolane, Pavulon, Irish whisky and morphine."
"I'm not a doctor, Hermia, but I'm pretty certain that Irish whisky is not standard medication, Hermia." If she had an eyebrow, Vura would have raised it.
"Its not, but I've seen it work before." Hermia said. She gave Vura a wink, as she removed what was left of Tremble's body glove, letting the biobed take over the functions to keep him alive.
The CMO examined his injuries. "We can save the spleen, the kidney, and repair the damage to gastrointestinal system and repair the breaks to his collar bone, left arm and leg, but there's not enough tissue left of his right leg to regrow it."
Vura frowned. "That's going to be tough." She sighed heavily. "The XO is probably going to need a lot of my care, then." Vura then wrinkled her nose. "That should be...." She stopped and thought for several moments while searching for an appropriate word. Finally, she settled on, "interesting."
Still unnoticed, Jayna silently slipped out of sickbay. Neil was safely in the doctor's care and she needed to return her suit and get cleaned up. She'd come back after his surgery and see how long Hermia would let her stay with him.
"We'll start with the gastrointestinal system." Hermia said grabbing laser scalpel to make an incision in the patient's lower abdomen. Then following the scans that had been taken, found the perforation, and used a medical laser to repair it and stimulate tissue growth.
Vura pointed the suction near the opening. "Just tell me what to do, Hermia. I certainly do not want to be the cause of the Colonel's death."
"That was the easy part, now comes the spleen, we have to repair it, before it goes septic." Hermia said sealing the abdominal incision. "I'm not going to need suction, so could you hand me the subdermal scalpel, and I'll bring up the display.
Vura reached for the subdermal scalpel and handed it to Hermia, announcing, "scalpel."
Taking the scalpel, began to repair Neil's spleen, without having to make an incision, following the earlier scan. "Vura, I'm repairing his spleen, to prevent the microbes held in there from getting into his blood stream, and dying of septic shock, once I'm done we can let the biobed do the rest." She said.
"That sounds good. Just make certain that it does not make things worse. He's already going to be sour when he comes to."
"Indeed." Hermia said.
As she worked away, she glanced at his life signs, for any change.
After a few moments, Hermia handed the scalpel back to Vura. "He's stable, but he won't be going anywhere for a while. The bed has been programed to produce an osteoregenerator field, followed by a dermal regenerator over him, would you like to activate it?"
Vura shrugged but then activated the dermal regenerator. She knew that the wounds would heal but the emotional scars would be lasting a greater time.
The biobed began to make a steady hum. Tremble was now stable.
Though not usually religious, Hermia made a silent prayer to which ever deities might be listening that the Colonel recover.
