Mission:
Episode 16 - Silent Cries
Location: Sick Bay - Deck 5 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD010 0900 hrs
"Bridge to Sick Bay. Incoming wounded. Bridge out." Tyler stabbed the comm button on the small Captain's Console. Thus far it seemed that this endeavour had not gone well. Mostly because it seemed to him that The Silence either did not know the complete story of what was going on, or they refused to tell the complete story. Either way they were in deep now and people got hurt. He hoped that there would be no fatalities.
Howard stood by the triage table as a woman who he recognized as Sergeant Sina Ravenna materalized. He made the cursory scan and found serious internal injuries and broken bones. "Doctor O'Rourke we have a red tag urgent. Internal injuries and broken bones consistent with concussion injuries." He called out the patient's status. As a specialist in emergency medicine, Dr Goldberg had been placed in charge of triage. His job was to assess and move the patient on to definitive care then move to the next patient.
Vura rushed into sickbay and put on some gloves. It had been a very long time since she was called upon to do any medical work. After all, it was always tricky where Deltans were involved. Her touch could offer the equivalent of an anesthetic, after all, it helped raise endorphins, with the pleasure that Deltans naturally gave. However, too much, and then there were the problems with sexual attraction and more. Gloves were helpful but, if one broke, or exposure was too great.... It was a mess. Regardless, she could be in sickbay to mentally help people through their trauma, whether patient, nurse, or doctor.
Hermia acknowledged Vura with a nod, and examined Sina, she appeared to be in a self-induced comatose state. Dressed in her surgical garb, Hermia had the computer erect a sterile field.
"Vura for now, I'd like you to monitor Sina's life signs, but be ready to assist me, if needed." Hermia said.
"I'll do what I can, Hermia. Hopefully I won't be needed other than to monitor life signs or emotionally supporting the wounded."
"We'll see." Hermia said.
Picking up a laser scalpel, Hermia made an incision. Inside she found that the Marine's liver had been damaged by a compression injury, which in turn had caused internal bleeding.
"Vura, I've found internal bleeding, I'm going to need you on suction, so I can fix the bleed."
The Deltan did not hesitate. She grabbed a suction and asked, "Where do you want this, Doctor?"
"Over here on the left side of her liver, I need you to clear the blood. Then I can seal the tear and make sure there are no others."
Vura crammed herself into the tight area, trying to make herself smaller so that she did not inadvertently cause more problems due to her biology. Pointing suction where Hermia directed, she asked, "Is that good?"
"Yes, thanks." Hermia said as she sealed the wound, having found no other bleeds. Performing one more scan of her patient's internal organs and finding mostly bruising, she said. "Now, the bleeding under control, I work on fixing her skeleton." She grabbed the osteo-regenerator.
She was about to start when she spotted that Sina's heart was full of bone shards. There were no bleeds, because the bone shards filled the gaps perfectly.
"Change of plan." Hermia said. "I'm going to need more of your help, Vura." She added. "Sina heart is riddled with bone shards and as I remove them it will lead to further bleeding."
"Won't a suction pull on the shards and cause more damage?" Vura asked.
"Yes, we'll have to be very careful." Hermia said.
"I'll try to be as delicate as a butterfly's kiss."
"Very poetic." Hermia said. "We'll do one at a time, you'll remove the bone shard and I'll suture the wound." Hermia took in deep breath and let it out. "We'll begin when you're ready.
"I'll do what?!" Vura asked. "I thought you just wanted me to clear blood!"
"Sorry, miscommunication." Hermia said. "I'll use forceps to remove the bone shards, you suck up the blood, I'll seal the wounds with the autosuture."
Vura nodded. "Just tell me if there's a problem with my suctioning...."
"Will do." Hermia said. "Ready?" She asked.
"Ready," Vura answered, positioning the suction, and wishing she had more experience with live individuals than training simulators.
"Let's begin." Hermia said reaching for the closest bone shard.
Vura held the suction steady, putting it near the muscles but not so close as to hopefully suck it in rather than outflowing blood. She dared a glance over at the focused Hermia, hoping that she was doing a sufficient job.
Hermia did her best to remain calm while working on Sina, she'd worked on Marines before, but this was extensive damage.
She was glad to have Vura's aid.
While Vura knew that she was being helpful, she still felt helpless. She did not have the requisite skill to do more than hold this suction. She could directly influence people mentally. But this, if there were enough people, someone else could fill in.
Hermia knew that Sina would have a lot of rehab after this operation, hopefully her Vulcan physiology would help.
Hermia worked tirelessly removing the bone shards from the Marines organs, knowing that if she missed one, it could work itself free and cause her to die of internal bleeding.
She just hoped she could make her good as new.
Was her arm going to fall off? Vura did not know but she certainly was tiring. The only thing that kept her focused was the fact that she knew that if she did not suck where instructed, that she could kill the patient. She dared a brief look at Hermia. The Doctor looked tired too. "Hang in there, Hermia," Vura offered.
Hermia smile.
After an hour of work, Hermia took a moment to breathe, then replaced her instruments with the osteogenerator.
Sina had significant skeletal damage, and Hermia began the rebuild of her skeleton, running the instrument slowly over her body.
Vura let the suction down on the table with an audible thunk. She then started waving her arm, trying to regain the feeling.
"Thank You, Vura." Hermia said. "Take five, I'll close up."
"If you say so," Vura uncharacteristically flopped down in a chair gracelessly.
Hermia swapped the osteogenerator for a dermalregenerator, and began closing up the Marine.
"More wounded incoming." Goldberg called out from his station and then continued with orders. "Triage teams to your stations. Prepare crash carts and stabilization kits." The sound of multiple transports could be heard as patients arrived. Most of them had been stabilized in the field. There was something to be said for the efficiency of Marine Corpsmen.
Vura asked, "Hermia, do you want me to triage the incoming or have the other doctors and nurses do that?"
"No, Goldberg's on that, I'm done her, you can take Sina to recovery."
"On it." Vura found a anti-grav bed and floated it over to where she could get Sina onto it and move her to the recovery room.
