Episode 17 - Going Home
Location: SCIF - Deck 9 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD016 1300 hrs
Mr. Tumnus was on his walks over this great and fast world again. At this time he has been to most places. And this place he also knew. For some reason people have gotten used to him walk around. The computer let the curious cat walk into any place he wanted. And again the doors open and he walked on the place with all the light boxes.
Tumnus has been here before. It was some time ago, but some of the smells were familiar. There were actually some nice two legs here. He carefully walked around to see if anyone here would notice him. He was getting a bit hungry. He remembered the room in the back, but now it didn't open. So he was currently reliant on the people in the big room here.
Emiko heard the door swish open. At first she did not notice anyone. After all, she was looking for a being at eye level. Yet, there was no such person. She got up from her station and giggled sweetly upon seeing Tumnus. "Ahhhh. A kitty." She bent down and said, "Pst pst pst pst. Come on here."
Tumnus heard the high pitch voice of a female two legs. He immediately hurried to the female. He softly purred as he rubbed his furry body against the two legs of the female.
Tobias had been swamped with data files since their return from Wren IX. Normally he would have hated this however, since he spent time with Hoa his life did not seem so bad. Which reminded him that he had to send her flowers as she recuperated from her injuries. Between, data from the Silence and incoming data from the USS Artemis he was a tad stressed.
Tobias heard Emiko and turned to look in her direction with a raised eyebrow. "We need to get it out of here. You know that they can communicate with Caitians and that means the data in here can be shared."
Emiko looked at Tobias skeptically. "And how would a cat be able to communicate anything to anyone else, even if it understood whatever was in here?"
Tumnus now heard the male two legs speak and the female talk too. He was unfamiliar with the language of these two legs. They couldn't speak like he did with Selorina. He should really look her up again. Maybe she was in the place called astrometric. He hoped they were talking about what food would give him. That must be it. He licked his lips at the thought.
Emiko looked down at the soft sound of the lick of Tumnus' tongue. "And look," she told Tobias. "The cat's thirsty or hungry. We can't let it go without."
Tobias was shocked that the communications specialist did not know about the way Caitians can talk with felines. "There is a sort of a telepathy that only Caitians can do with standard felines. It may have to do with their shared lineage."
"Even so, what could a cat really communicate? I mean, as cute as they are, they are not at the same intelligence or comprehension level as a Caitian."
Tobias' look softened, Emiko did have a point. "Perhaps, but do you really want to risk it?"
"Look," Emiko replied, practically looking down on Tobias, despite her diminutive size. "If you're really that concerned, we just keep the cat away from anything that would be compromising. Will that satisfy you?" She stroked the cat again and started heading towards the replicator, not waiting for an answer.
Tumnus purred as the female patted him. He really had no idea what they were discussing. If it was about food, they were taking an awful lot of to give it to him. He started to rub himself against the hand then the legs of the female. Hopefully she would understand that.
Emiko told Tobias, "See, I'm right." She pranced over to the replicator and got a bowl of water and soft cat food. She then walked over near to the entrance, though not near enough to trigger the doors and placed the food down and told Mr. Tumnus, "Here you go."
Tumnus found the location of the food a little peculiar, but went over to eat from it nonetheless. It purred softly and satisfied. He was already thinking about where he would be sleeping after dinner.
Tobias simply watched as the events transpired. He was absolutely of the opinion that cats did not belong on starships. Well at least they did not belong outside of someone's quarters. However, he knew that the Commodore had made this Tumnus a member of the crew. So, there was not much for it. At the very least he thought that the cat should be kept away from sensitive areas. Who knew if that actually was a cat, it could very well be a Q or any other entity. He simply scowled not knowing what else he could do or say.
Emiko strolled up to Tobias and asked, "What do you have against the cat? Do you hate animals?"
Tobias rolled his eyes and sighed heavily. He could not believe that she did not understand his meaning. "I have nothing against cats. I have everything against unauthorized personnel being here. That feline is an official member of the crew. The Commodore made that so. To that end it is subject to the same regulations as the rest of us."
"And if it is subject to the same regulations, then why would you think it would betray us, even if it understood everything?" Emiko logically responded. "Honestly, do you always paranoid or do you allow your significant other to actually relax with you...?"
"I could ask the same question of the hundreds if not thousands of Starfleet Officers who have betrayed Starfleet and the Federation over the years. If they can and are subject to the rules and regulations than why not the cat?" Tobias spoke as a matter of fact. As if that was all he would ever say on the matter and there was no convincing him otherwise.
Emiko rolled his eyes at Beckett. "And so, nobody on this ship should be allowed in intel? Now you're being silly."
She is infuriating. Tobias thought. "If you were familiar with the rules and regulations of this vessel, then you would know that no one that is not in the Intelligence Department is allowed in the SCIF without the expressed authorization of the Commanding Officer of this ship. Now, before you say anything if you show me some sort of documentation from the Commodore that allows this feline to be in here then I will drop the subject entirely." He was fairly certain that Emiko would not go as far as asking Malbrooke for permission for a cat to be in the room.
"Perhaps we should speak with the 2XO or CO and test your theory, then?" Emiko responded with a creepy grin.
"Be my guest. I am sure that the Commodore would love to hear about how his crew is disobeying orders." As far as Tobias was concerned there was nothing else to be said on the matter. He turned back to his terminal and set about his work.
The fact that Tobias left her be, meant victory, as far as Emiko was concerned. After all, had he really been concerned, he would have contacted Commander McGowen or Commodore Malbrooke on his own. She bent over Mr. Tumnus and asked, "So, how is the food tasting?"
Tumnus is purring as the female two legs talked to him. He loved getting food, which was obvious by his physique. Not that he was overweight. He walked around this huge world a lot. And it is big. But you could tell he enjoyed a tuna now and then. He still wasn't sure what the two two legs were talking about. He ignored that for now. After dinner he really needed a nap, so he was looking around now and to see where he could rest.
Emiko watched as the cat finished eating. When he did, she bent down low and asked, "Do you mind if I hold you?" She reached her arms out welcomingly. "I probably should take you somewhere else so I don't get too many issues from Beckett, now that you are done."
Tumnus didn't really like being carried around. Usually they would bring back to the place they called the 'cargo hold' and yes it had a bed for him and other stuff, but Tumnus much rather wondered in other places. He slowly turned around and then jumped on the console the other two legs was sitting at and then walked over it and trying to find another place to jump to.
Tobias was taken aback by the sudden leap of the cat. "Gorram it." He picked up the cat and placed it back on the ground. "I need to work and can't have this things paws messing up my work. If it has to be here keep it off the consoles." He said to Emiko as he continued to shoo Tumnus away.
Emiko giggled. "I don't really think that you can tell a cat much. They function to the beat of their own drum." Emiko looked at Tumnus and said, "pstpstpstpst," hoping it would draw the cat back to her.
Tumnus was a bit shocked by the male two legs moving him to the floor. But then the female started to make noises. For some reason it drew his attention and he fell into her trap. He slowly walked up to her curiously, almost entranced by the sound.
Emiko returned a self satisfied smile to Tobias, "I bet your love life suffers for the same reason. You don't know how to attractive positive attention." After her insult, she continued to whisper, "pstpstpstpst."
Tumnus couldn't resist the sound the female two legs was making and slowly walked towards her. He knew what was coming, there was one particular female two legs that always kept doing it, and he fell for it every time. And she brought him back home. That's what he called it. Home, was in what the two legs called the cargo bay. He liked home. To sleep. And there was always someone to feed him and play with him. But Tumnus was an explorer. So when no one was looking, he left home. He could be away from home for days.
And Tumnus knew he would be caught again. But he knew he would be going home. And home was safe.
Emiko gathered up the cat, continuing to making sweet sounds at it. She finally told the cat, "I enjoy you, but it is time to take you away. My co-worker isn't really fond of cats and is worried about nothing. So, let's get you somewhere else. Alright?"
Tumnus purred satisfied as he heard the soothing voice of the female. He had no clue what she was saying or what was going on. And he knew he would eventually find his way here again. He liked this place too.
Beckett watched the two leave, he was gladdened for it. There should not be any unauthorized being in the SCIF. The risk was simply too great and the sooner that Emiko realized that the better off she would be. For now Backett turned back to his data, there was something about Commodore York that he wanted to take a look at.
