Episode 17 - Going Home
Location: Deck 2 Section 34 - USS Pioneer
Timeline: MD008 1800 hrs
Millie had heard of what happened to Tremble down on Wren IX. She wanted to do something to help cheer him up. A repayment as to him taking the time to comfort an ensign who seemed ready to crumble into dust when she had first arrived. Well, that was what Millie had felt when confronting her own anxiety. And the strangeness that was occurring on the ship so long ago. When people had disappeared.
Just those simple words, helped her out.
Wanting to send good luck towards him, Millie made a chain of origami cranes, blue, red and golden yellow and some were white. Along with those Millie made some origami daffodils, bright yellow. A bouquet of them also was said to bring about hope and new beginnings, Joy and happiness.
Being satisfied with what she created, Millie made her way to where Tremble's quarters were. The hall was clear, so she placed her offerings near the door, she paused though.
"Rommie, would it be okay if I left something for the Colonel here. I don't want someone to walk away with them."
Millie was slightly nervous at actually speaking to Rommie.
"Or maybe, give them to the Colonel?" the ensign requested shyly.
After a short pause, Millie decided she'd just attach the flowers, the cranes and... there was the sound of someone coming down the hall.
Millie had just tacked the daffodils upon the door frame with some poster tack, and some of the cranes. She decided she'd better get off this deck. Millie left the area quickly, forgetting to leave the get well card on the door.
Several cranes were left in the wake of her departure, upon the floor.
Jayna saw the woman at Neil's door and slowed, watching her. But when Millie fled. There was no better word for it. She picked up her pace--and the trail of origami cranes.
"Excuse me," the half-Vulcan called, hoping to slow the other woman.
Millie froze in her tracks, her heart pounding quickly. She whispered "I'm in trouble." in the manner of Leia Organa, she whispered instead of saying help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, she said. "Help me Rommie Kenobi you're my only hope."
"Really?" Jayna said. It was mostly to herself, but loud enough for Rommie to hear her. "I'm not going to eat her."
Rommie had been observing the Ensign since her arrival on the deck; or at least part of her had been. Ensign Ambrose was an interesting contrast: timid with new people or unplanned for situations. Yet fierce and determined when she seemingly forgot to be nervous. Creating a cascading data stream from the nearest terminal, Rommie stepped from the stream. With Jayna as the only other person present, Rommie amused herself by appearing initially in a flowing white robe whose material clung slightly when she turned.
As a nod to Princess Yuki, her robe had silver lotus flowers stitched into it. her hair had lengthened and was gathered over each ear in a reserved rendition of the soldaderas (and a science fiction princess). For some reason, the notes attached to this costume indicated that the designer of the fiction firmly believed that there wasn't any underwear in space.
So, for purity to the source, Rommie complied.
She turned and straightened before the two women, reaching up to push the hood off. As it dropped, her image switched to her normal uniform skant of grey with marine green piping twisted with gold. Her hair shortened and her arms folded as she slipped into an at ease posture. To amuse herself, she kept the costumes mid-calf, white boots with black soles.
"You summoned me Ensign," she asked, letting a smile touch both her lips and eyes. Glancing to Jayna, she said," I'd hope not, Lieutenant. Though the comparison between predator and prey is apt."
Looking back to Millie, she said, "Was my choice of costume appropriate? Perhaps Ms. Eden's Jeannie costume would have been more appropriate for a summoning?"
Jayna had a hard time not laughing, but was able to keep it to a smile. She appreciated Rommie's appearance--and the costume. She picked up another of the dropped cranes to hand back to Millie when she had a chance.
Rommie glanced at Jayna, then at the cranes and smiled. "Some paper can be worked through with micro-miniaturized filaments she remarked. She brought up her hand and a crane appeared, then she added a nudge of energy. Slowly, the crane's neck and wings moved, a white on white eye blinked before the paper stilled. "Eju Sidinari two hundred years ago developed a technique using photovoltaics to make them appear alive. Some of the first ones unfortunately did catch fire.."
"That's beautiful," Jayna said, watching the cranes. "You know, I think it would be interesting to replicate something like that so the cranes could glow when touched..." She looked first at Rommie.
Then she turned to Millie. "I'm Jayna, by the way."
"Your outfit is just beautiful!" Millie exclaimed.
Millie couldn't help but watch Rommie's transformation, her eyes widening with wonder. Taking a deep breath, she took time to have a look towards Jayna.
What Rommie had done with the crane truly caught Millie's attention, smiling and looking as to how it could be done.
Realizing that she had been spoken to she reached out her hand to accept the crane from Jayna.
"Nice to meet you, Jayna, I'm Millie."
A bit of a pause as she looked at the unfinished decorations she spoke softly.
"Well now that I have been stopped from running away, Hopefully, the Colonel won't mind the added decoration on his door. I heard what happened to him...."
A worried furrow appeared. "I hope he won't think I have a crush on him." Millie pulling out the card she had made. "I -I just wanted-well do something to cheer him up."
"Do you think he would think that? If so I'll remove this stuff." having had put up the card on the door, Millie chewed her lower lip in contemplation.
"I'll tell him," Jayna said.
She found another lost crane and picked it up. "These aren't bad."
"Thank you." Millie smiling, "Do you know how to make origami art? "
Jayna nodded. "I do. I have several sizes and colors of paper. It's a good hobby to have if you're in one place and have to be quiet."
"I have that as well. I use it to relax and as a stress relief. Have you met, Sophia? The captain's yeoman. I was teaching her how to make an origami flower. It was rather enjoyable, and relaxing."
"I haven't met her. But then, I don't know many people outside intel and the Marines." Jayna shrugged. "What sort of flower do you fold?"
"I like to fold a few flowers, roses, those are fun to do, and there are animals I like to work on as well." Millie commented "I am just starting to get to know the crew. It's taking a bit. Those I have run into, are really great people."
A thought came to her mind. "Jayna, do you know how to play an instrument? "
"I'm learning to play the flute. I don't have a wide repertoire yet." Although she was getting better. Especially as she's also learning to carve her own flutes.
Tilting her head as the two women conversed, wondering at her summoning, Rommie amused herself by altering the cranes to toucans, the paper translucent and a rainbow of color shifted over through the spectrums, with small nano-lights flashing internally to add to the affect.
"I like that." Jayna turned to Rommie. "I think Millie here got nervous when I saw her leaving cranes at Neil's door."
Millie looked over to Rommie, "Do you play an instrument, well something that you prefer to play?"
Rommie maybe the Colonel's aide but, still, she has her own personality and that was something that Millie noticed.
Tilting her head toward Millie, the AI smiled kindly and said, "Ensign, I can likely pull a program to assimilate the instrumental skill you require proficiently. How may I assist you?"
Jayna chuckled, but tried to hide it by picking up one last crane. Was Millie dropping more, or had she really missed that one? Jayna wondered if she could fold something that would be part crane and part something else. She would have to look at different designs and see what was possible.
"Ah true but I thought that you might have a preference." Millie stated. "As for why I am asking, I am slowly working to find out who on the ship knows how to play an instrument or sing, I'm forming a band or just a group, I have called it The Sisterhood of the Leather Pants."
Seeing Jayna pick up another crane, Millie took a look at her bag, realizing that she had been holding it at an angle where the cranes were dropping out.
Rommie assessed that. "Sisterhood of the leather pants," she repeated as she analyzed the request. "I could play keyboard or violin, or most anything required." Smiling slightly, she let her image fuzz slightly, then split so there were two Rommies standing side by side. Together, they said, "Or, multiple instruments, if needed."
"These are pretty good," Jayna said, handing the crane back to Millie. "Sisterhood of the Leather Pants?"
Two Rommies? "That is rather mind-blowing seeing two of you." Millie remarked with a little laugh.
To Jayna, "Thank you, I do make other figures. What do you like to make? And as for Sisterhood of the leather pants, it was just something that I came up with sort of an homage to the old movie Sisterhood of the Traveling pants. And I think I mentioned it before, I am working on forming a band, plus getting to know the other ladies on the ship."
Accepting the crane from Jayna, Millie added, "Also I do wear leathers, when riding my motorcycle at home."
"Quite a few questions," Jayna replied, smiling. "I make a number of things, depending on my mood. I have several books with patterns. I'm rather fond of dragons, though." She shrugged. "As I said, I play the flute, but not with enough proficiency to be in a band. But I do wear leather."
Laughing softly at herself and Jayna's comment about her spate of questions.
"Sorry for the deluge of questions." Millie said wryly. "And welcome to the Sisterhood of the Leather Pants."
Looking at the Rommie Twins, Millie asked. "What do you think, would you like to be a part of the sisterhood?"
"I love dragons, and I would love to have an origami session with you. That is if you have the time." Millie's mind went back to what Jayna had mentioned earlier.
"Sure. I have a little time while we're traveling, and I always like sharing what I've learned." And learning new things.
Rommie smiled at Millie and Jayna, her two forms merging in a brief blur, then her uniform changing again to a red body glove which melted away to bare her arms and provide a low cut bodice, all of which might be literally and virtually painted on. The vest took on a more leather consistency and her uniform leather pants bore marine green piping. The change also included twin locks of red among her raven black that started behind the ears and touched above her throat . "My author suggested this as one of my default uniform choices that the Colonel might prefer, but he reset those to align with the Commodore's policies." Subtly, Rommie's brown eyes had switched to medical green.
Turning to Millie, Rommie said, "I'd be pleased to be included in your Sisterhood. Is there cake?"
"There should always be cake," Jayna replied. "Vanilla, with cream cheese frosting."
"Oh yes there must be cake." Millie grinning from ear to ear.
She wasn't feeling uncomfortable anymore where Jayna was concerned, and Rommie was certainly helping as well, in Millie's feeling comfortable.
"So--I am looking forward to doing some origami with the two of you. Especially have to create that paper you introduced us to, Rommie." she gave pause and looked back towards Tremble's quarters. "I probably should get going, since I cause a little bit of a scene?" giving a little bit of a laugh.
"That sounds great. Let me know when you have some free time," Jayna replied. "And I'll make sure Neil knows about your get well card and cranes." In reality, it was likely Rommie already told him.
Rommie met Jayna's eyes and gave the briefest of nods and turned back to Millie. "If you like, the Colonel's schedule is very open these days, with him being on light duty. Would you like to speak to him possibly tomorrow? Perhaps a lunch?"
"Wait, what?" Millie's eyes flaring rather wide. "But uh, um..." her eyes shifting over towards Jayna, then going back to Rommie. "L-lunch with Colonel Tremble? Uh, I don't know if that would be a good thing. Uh--would he really want to talk me?" looking a little bit nervous.
Jayna chuckled. "Well, he does eat, and he does talk. I don't think he'd mind meeting you in the lounge. But you'd have to ask him."
"Ask him over lunch? Or are you talking about my asking him in general as to having lunch with him. Okay if he has the time, I would actually like to do that. Anyway, I'd uh better vamoose." Millie giving a warm smile, starting to feel a bit more relaxed.
"Thanks for the conversation and I am looking forward to getting to know you a bit more." Millie looking from Rommie to Jayna.
Her eyes sparkling, Rommie said, "I have you scheduled for lunch tomorrow in After Eleven. The Colonel needs the distraction and I think it's a good idea to keep him occupied. As executive officer, it's important for him to be in touch with the crew. This is a good way." She didn't add that it would likely keep that it might spike the cannon of that vulture of a Chief Counselor.
"You could even give him one of your cranes in person," Jayna said helpfully.
"Tomorrow?" Millie gulped, then drew in a steadying breath, looking towards Jayna, smiling at her suggestion of giving Tremble a crane.
"Okay, I'll arrive at the appointed time, and I love the idea, Jayna of giving him a crane." Millie nodding. "And on that note I'll, take my leave now." the ensign giving a brief wave, before she scampered off.
Millie never thought something like that was going to happen but, she made another connection with another member of the crew. That was important, very important to her.
Watching the Ensign retreat, Rommie’s form rippled into her customary uniform and she glanced at Jayna. "The Colonel should be thrilled, yes?"
The half-Vulcan couldn't help laughing. Neil would definitely be something. "I think he'll appreciate the visit." She'd have to ask him about it later.
